The expansion works of the Puebla de Don Fadrique bridge begin, Granada

One more lane will be gained to eliminate the priority crossing that currently exists, in which there have been several accidents.

The Ministry of Public Works has started the security works of the Puebla de Don Fadrique bridge, which involves widening the width of the bridge to gain one more lane and thus eliminate the priority passage that currently exists, in which several accidents have occurred in recent years.

The counselor of the branch, Marifrán Carazo, recalled the importance of acting on a bridge with a "very high" percentage of heavy vehicles, 36%, who choose the A-330 road because it is "the shortest route between the interior of Andalusia and the Region of Murcia and the Levante, with a saving of one hundred kilometers away ".

The head of Development stated that, with this work, the four years of waiting by the residents of Puebla de Don Fadrique is ended and recalled that the City Council has been demanding measures since 2013 and that, although there was a project drawn up for the widening of this bridge, the previous government "never endowed it with a budget item."

"It was a matter of political will", said the counselor, who went yesterday together with the mayor, Mariano García, to visit some works that began just a few days ago, after receiving authorization for their start from the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation ( CHG).


The bridge is located at kilometer 52 of the A-330 regional highway, just 500 meters from the urban center of Puebla de Don Fadrique, which is why it serves both long-distance routes and local traffic. It is 52 meters long and six meters wide, of which only 4.9 are useful, which makes it impossible for vehicles to circulate in both directions at the same time. Despite the fact that the passage is regulated with priority signs, there are frequent accidents due to frontal collisions.

The works, which are being carried out by the UTE Prodesur / Codepi-Vélez for 667,192 euros, include the construction of a new deck wider than eleven meters, with two lanes of 3.5 meters each, plus two shoulders of 75 centimeters and two sidewalks of 1.25 meters, which will be supported by the core of the old bridge, which will be reinforced.


Parapets will also be installed on the edges of the road and the pedestrian railing, and improvement work will be carried out on the bridge structure, such as the reinforcement of the five arches and the repair of defects on the underside of the vaults using mortar.


While the works are being carried out, which have an execution period of six months, a provisional detour will be enabled to allow the circulation of traffic on a road through which about 1,500 vehicles pass daily.
