Li-Fi: the internet at the speed of light will expand in Spain from Andalusia

The Sevillian Spal, associated with Tigris and the Cremades-Calvo Sotelo firm, will test Lifi technology at the Gestamp factory in Linares, 100 times faster than Wi-Fi and without saturation problems

Spal has bought the patent from the German Fraunhofer institute and will be able to commercialize the technology in Spain and Latin America

When 5G, in the midst of a pandemic, begins to reach our lives, a small embryo is born that in the future may also mean a revolution in data transmission.

It is called Lifi and it consists, in simple words, in enhancing connectivity through light and not radio frequency waves. The transmission of binary data is achieved through the use of Led bulbs that constantly flicker imperceptibly to the human eye. To understand us, it works like 'routers' of light.

Well, this technology seems to be up to 100 times faster than 5G and, unlike Wi-Fi or cable, transmission through this system is more secure as it is not subject to saturation problems.

It will be implanted experimentally in a few months in Linares and its expansion in Spain will begin in Andalusia. This will be done by the Sevillian construction company Spal (which provides the infrastructure) and the Barcelona company Tigris (which provides the technology), thanks to the purchase of the Lifi patent from the German Fraunhofer institute for implementation and marketing in Spain and Latin America. Spal will have the exclusive for sale in all sectors except aeronautical. The Cremades-Calvo Sotelo office has collaborated in the operation, which offers legal support for its extension in the municipalities through public-private collaboration, since the 'smart city' is expected to be one of the areas with the greatest expansion of Lifi.

Abraham Carrascosa, CEO of Spal, affirms that the tests will begin before the end of the year at the Gestamp factory in Linares for the manufacture of automotive components, in collaboration with the Centro Tecnológico Metalmecánico y del Transporte (Cetemet). "We want to accelerate them to the maximum to see how the technology (which would be applied in robots) works inside the factory. At the Mercedes plant in Germany, the results have been spectacular. We want to start with Gestamp and then move forward with the installation in Linares herself, on a street, for example (taking advantage of public lighting), "he says. Spal has proposed to the Junta de Andalucía to develop a Lifi pilot project in a rural area, since this technology can help solve the problem of low internet speed in some areas of the region that are far from urban centers. It also negotiates with municipalities such as Mairena del Aljarafe, in Seville, the incorporation of Lifi for 'smart city' solutions.
