The Baena City Council has awarded us the intervention works in the Plazas de España and Andalucía, which will gain space for citizens. The works consist of raised platforms and widening of steel pavements, included in the IDAE pedestrian mobility program. A project framed in the low carbon economy program for local entities with Feder Funds.

With the works, the city council intends, within the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan, to promote walking on pedestrian streets such as Castro del Río avenue and the “stay use” in squares such as Spain and Andalusia.

Thus, it proposes to pedestrianize part of the Plaza de España so that it does not necessarily have to continue working as a roundabout for motorized traffic. For this, a single platform is available where traffic will be maintained, limiting the speed to 20 km / h in the tangential direction to the old town. The movement of the roundabout turn will be limited to vehicles that go south-north of the square with shops and safe school routes. Specifically, traffic is eliminated in the area that faces Juan Varela street and a lounge area is created. In case of need, movement in the roundabout is not impeded, acting on removable bollards.

A substantial reform is also proposed in the Plaza de Andalucía with a single platform in a plaza with shops and restaurants that currently allocate more than 80% of the space to circulate or park cars. The performance will be accompanied by an improvement in gardening and vegetation. There is also a stay area in the part of the square near the kiosk, which will cease to be an amorphous space for cars to become a space for recreation and rest.

In addition, the intention is to expand the pavements on Castro del Río Avenue, in some sections with reduced inaccessible sidewalks, on the way to the San Francisco convent church and the Cañada park.

Finally, part of the pavement will be replaced and the railing on Juan Torrico street from Plaza de España to Valdelomar and Pineda streets will be eliminated. The objective is to carry out an intervention in the existing road to introduce a suitable itinerary for pedestrians.
